A trio of officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped after the incident was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an court order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He was convinced the detonation had occurred on a floor above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
