Bluefin Tuna Fetches Unprecedented Price of $3.2m at Tokyo Auction
A massive Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the year.
The top offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets throughout Japan and internationally.
"The first tuna signals good luck," commented the business owner, a familiar participant at the traditional January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Past
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "astonished at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated in no time."
This most recent purchase surpasses his previous record purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another food company, which announced the fish would be available at its locations throughout the country.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Swift Service
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for customers at the bidder's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so lucky as the year begins," remarked one satisfied diner.
