Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
Summers remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, excited about the potential of the organization, and anticipate observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages demonstrated that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it accepted his determination to depart.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.
Legislative Background
This development comes after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to endorse a bill that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on the case.
The bill will then head to the administration of the White House for approval. Trump has said he expects to sign the legislation, after modifying his view on the matter following pressure from his followers.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee recently referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails revealed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to connect the official to notable world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the general audience, Summers expressed he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish faith and fix relationships with the individuals nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
The former official became part of the board of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive the company leader.
