Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories After Recent Detentions
The Miami Heat recorded eighty-six opening half points versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match since player Rozier was arrested for suspected illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland also secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 win over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the fairness of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"And 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and investigating."
