Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
