Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

After locating Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the encounter originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
