The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
