The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
