Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to know that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager wants his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is about using it in the right way. Personal talent is important but England understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when stardom dominates. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had much to ponder after being left out of the previous squad. He watched the national side secure their spot at the tournament in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach talk about loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, he has responded in top form, netting important strikes for his club against Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have made his squad place precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on intimidating opponents instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that his period not playing has demonstrated that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham just has the edge. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he has. Everyone must support him and build a setting which he can channel that intensity towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since March and has found it hard to hit the heights this year but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after how he played in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it hurts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. The coach prefers him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this vision regarding him for years. I think it fits his style best.”
He agreed there are occasions when the player has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also so used to representing Man City in a certain structure, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other drilling in goals from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives should Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter assisting Kane to score in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a score. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires Bellingham onside but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a powerful squad into an even better one.
