Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Next Head of State.

After a definitive runoff election, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Agenda Centered On Law and Order and Migration

Known for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to tackle rising crime and significantly reduce migration.

He repeatedly pointed to immigrants, notably the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face deportation.

His plans envisioned controversial measures such as erecting camps, border walls, electric fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northern frontier.

Within a Broader Wave

Numerous observers view Kast's victory as aligning with a larger right-wing wave in South America, coming after recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other pundits additionally view it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Solid Mandate

Despite his decisive electoral victory, Kast is not expected to hold an overall majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are combined together.

This legislative situation may complicate his agenda, including a vow to cut public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to provided a clear explanation.

"We have several aspects about how a Kast administration will be that remain unclear because he has not explained the way he will implement them," commented a political science professor.

The professor stated, "In terms of economic policy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts associated with the right. However the area with much less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the race."
