Authorities mentioned they could not remove the eyes without harming the artwork.

A young person from Australia has appeared in court after reportedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by affixing plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared via phone at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on Tuesday, facing with a single charge of property damage.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that CCTV footage captured a person putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.

The accused did not enter a plea and told the court she was unwell, as reported by news outlets, with the magistrate recommending her to secure a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in the final month of the year.

The affected sculpture following the googly eyes were taken off.

The following day the alleged incident, the city leader said that repairs to the much-loved community sculpture would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those people of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

She said the local government would seek the “significant” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.

When the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its cost and design.

Priced at A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.

Formal name vs. nickname
The sculpture is its formal title but locals nicknamed the artwork the ‘Blue Blob’.
